I’ve always been interested in model making.
When I was in college trying to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I had the chance to work with a car model of our choice. Sadly, we didn’t build it like you would a regular car model and created a….”thing”…to base our next abstract drawing on. I remember being so upset about the whole ordeal that I put the “thing” into a box and didn’t look at it for the rest of the semester.
Jump ahead a few years, and I’m on Discord looking at one of the channels my dojo has available, and saw someone made a chibi version of a Gundam. And I fell in love with it!
I had no idea what I needed to do to get into this hobby, or even where to start. Luckily, this is an area my current boyfriend is an expert in! We went to Hobbyland and found the same kit I saw on Discord, and he bought a kit too. This was his first time working with what are called “SD Gundam” – SD = “super deformed” – since he’s always worked with the larger kits. And we both enjoyed making out little Gundam! They came out so good! And I was hooked from then on!

I’ve since moved up to HG – “High Grade” – and recently discovered SD MG – “Super Deformed Master Grade” – kits and have loved working with all of them. Some are easier than others. Some look cooler on the box than they do when they’re put together. And some look so amazing when they’re done, especially when you can place them into different action poses. But I still enjoy making the SD kits. They’re really fast to build now and I love how they turn out. I even got some model kit markers to add in details where I feel the model is too plain or just needs to have a little more depth where different parts connect.

I have yet to build a MG – “Master Grade” – kit, but I have two that I’ve purchased that I’m excited to get started on!
This is definitely a hobby I really enjoy doing, that I get to do with my boyfriend, and has a very rewarding final once you’re finished. It’s also very true when other hobbists say “once you get one, you can’t stop.”
